History
During the late 1960's and early 1970's many Maori from the Tainui Waikato region came to Wellington for work either arranged through the New Zealand Government's Maori Affairs Office, by word of mouth or independently.
One of the largest employers of Tainui Maori in Wellington at the time was the Gear Meat Company Factory in Petone, Lower Hutt. As a result, a social network of mainly Tainui Waikato workers and their families arose which formed the basis of the Tainui Waikato ropu in Wellington.
